Delhi’s Shastri Bhavan fire sparks political row

Updated: 20190501

NEW DELHI: A fire broke out on the terrace of Shastri Bhavan in a pile of waste material on Tuesday afternoon. It was doused in 10 minutes, a fire service official said.

Responding to the news flash about the fire, Congress party`s president Rahul Gandhi took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that he was burning evidence in anticipation of ouster from power.

Modi-ji, burning files is not going to save you. Your day of judgment is coming,

Rahul tweeted. Shastri Bhavan houses key central ministries.

The chief fire officer Atul Garg, however, said, “Neither anybody was injured nor any file or equipment got damaged due to the blaze. “Some discarded furniture and computers kept on the terrace caught fire due to extreme heat, Garg said. “We contained the fire within the storage area. Some of the offices right below the store area was evacuated and the fire was doused soon.

A fire official said they had received a call around noon following which seven fire tenders were sent from the Parliament Street station. The fire was contained within a storage area on the terrace on the sixth floor.

An inquiry has been initiated into why the discarded materials were dumped on the terrace. Office work at the building was halted for an hour, said a fire official.

The jibe appeared to allude to the charges of corruption that Rahul Gandhi has levelled against the BJP-led government besides the upcoming results of the Lok Sabha elections.
