Tanker catches fire, three die

VARANASI: Three persons died when a tanker laden with chemicals overturned and caught fire near Leelapur village in Chandauli on Sunday.

The tanker was heading towards Varanasi from Naubatpur on Bihar border. When it reached Leelapur, the staff of forest department outpost flashed torchlight towards driver and he lost control on the steering. After hitting the road divider, the tanker overturned and caught fire. The driver and cleaner failed to jump out.

A passerby identified as Rajesh (32) of Bisauri village was also engulfed by the flames and died. Fire tenders reached the spot around 5 am. The firemen succeeded in extinguishing the fire after a struggle of two hours. The identity of driver and cleaner of tanker could not be ascertained.

Angered by the incident, local residents blocked the National Highway-II near Leelapur and staged a demonstration. They demanded compensation for the bereaved family of Rajesh and removal of outpost from there. The situation normalised after SDM Sujit Kumar reached the spot and assured to fulfill their demands.

Police were waiting for the arrival of tanker owner to ascertain the identity of killed driver and cleaner and register a complaint. The bodies were sent for postmortem examination.

Body found: Body of an unidentified woman, aged around 20, was found lying along a canal near Bihda village in Mirzamurad on Sunday morning. It was suspected that she was murdered. There were marks of injuries inflicted by a knife.

Arrested: Manish Pathak and Vipin Singh were arrested in Rohania on charges of issuing threat to Shashi Kumar Prajapati to extort money. Two other accomplices escaped. Police also recovered the mobile phones used in issuing threat.
