Three die, one missing in predawn Chinatown fire that may be due to overheated cellphone charger
Updated: 2013-09-23-10:35
At least three people were killed while one was reported missing in a fire that hit a commercial-residential building in Manila’s Sta. Cruz district before dawn Monday.
The fire at the three-story building at the corner of Ongpin and Tomas Mapua Streets in Sta. Cruz reached the fifth alarm, radio dzBB’s Carlo Mateo reported.
Firefighters had to aim their hoses at nearby structures as well to keep the fire from spreading. The fire raged despite a downpour over the area.
An initial investigation showed the fire started at a unit of one Erlinda Reyes Ong at the building’s mezzanine.
However, arson investigators are still determining the cause of the fire.
Investigators are also verifying claims by local residents that an overheating cell phone charger may have caused the fire.
The fire was placed under control at 6:30 a.m. —KG, GMA News
