JAKARTA: Four people, including a young child, were killed in a fire that razed a two-story house in Jelambar, Grogol, West Jakarta, at dawn on Saturday.
Kardi, a staffer from the fire extinguishment and disaster handling office in West Jakarta, confirmed that the fire razed the building at 2 a.m. and was put out after 17 fire trucks were deployed.
“The fire occurred in a two-story house and killed four people inside,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.
He speculated that the four victims got trapped in rooms on the second-floor of the house because the rooms’ windows were equipped with iron bars that hindered them from being able to escape.
The police are still investigating the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said the city administration would evaluate the use of iron bars in houses and other buildings due to the increasing number of occupants getting trapped in houses razed by fires.
“We will evaluate in detail the kind of buildings that can use iron bars,” he said, adding that homeowners should not use materials that could jeopardize their safety.
