Fire damages thousands of homes in N. Jakarta
Updated: 2013-10-03-10:28
A fire gutted at least 1,325 homes in three neighborhood units (RT) in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, early on Tuesday, displacing 5,300 people living in the area.
There were no casualties from the incident, but the total damage was estimated at Rp 2 billion (US$176,436).
Residents assumed that the fire was caused by a short circuit in a house that had been left vacant after the owner had returned to his hometown in Madura, East Java.
Up to 33 fire trucks were deployed to extinguish the fire.
North Jakarta Mayor Bambang Sugiyono gave assurances that the residents would get to renew any official documents lost in the fire.
“We guarantee they will be able to get new IDs, birth certificates and other necessary documents,” he said.
Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo visited a temporary shelter on Wednesday and distributed books, school uniforms and rice to the victims.
He also gave Rp 15 million in cash to the community unit (RW) chief to be disbursed among the victims.
