LPG-run van catches fire, 5 injured

KANPUR: Five persons, including a five-month old, suffered serious burns after an LPG-run van in which they were travelling caught fire near the Kali-Badi temple in Chakeri area of the city on Tuesday. The injured were admitted to a private hospital.

According to the police, the people were going to Aung in Fatehpur district from Peondi village in Jajmau area of the city in the four-wheeler. “The van caught fire near the Kali-Badi temple on the Kanpur-Lucknow highway and five persons sitting in the front and rear seats

suffered burn injuries. They were immediately rushed to private hospital in Chakeri,” said a senior police officer.

The injured have been identified as Dhanu (45), his wife Munni (40), their five month-old daughter Sonam, Dhanu’s mother Ram Rati (60) and brother Shyamu (35). Of the five, Munni and Sonam have suffered the most severe burns and their condition was reported to be serious. A case of negligence has been registered at Chakeri police station. The police are trying to zero in on the driver who fled the spot soon after the mishap.

The police apprised fire department about the incident. The police said they will question the owner of the van.

Dhanu is a tannery worker and stays at Peondi village. His brother Shyamu told TOI, “The driver was the first to come out of the vehicle and instead of rescuing us, he fled the scene. The locals of the area arrived at the site on hearing our cries and rescued us before alerting the police”.

The damaged van has been impounded by the police.
