MUMBAI: Eight people were injured, five of them severely, when a domestic cylinder leak led to a fire in Mankhurd on Friday night.
Among the victims were two children.
The fire started around 10 pm in Room Number 102 of Building Number 5 at Chikowadi in Mankhurd and spread to other rooms.
“All the residents were evacuated within a few minutes by the fire brigade personnel,” police inspector Shankar Singh Rajput said. “Six persons and two children were rushed to Sion hospital with burn injuries.”
By Saturday afternoon, three persons had been discharged. The five severely burnt victims were shifted to Masina Hospital in Byculla.
Doctors said one of them, 10-year-old Dhanesh Shetiyar, was on ventilator. The others were identified as Mamta Shirodkar (35), Shalan Gaikwad (31), Shradhha Bhoire (30) and Suryakant Kamble (27). Shirodkar sustained 90% burns, Gaikwad 83%, Bhoire 70% and Kamble 63%, said the police.
In Bhoire’s statement to the police, she said she had smelt gas and rushed out to inform the others.
“We are investigating the incident and have not registered a case,” Rajput said.
