A fire broke out from a leaking gas pipe in Gazipur’s Kaliganj upazila yesterday morning, halting traffic movement on the adjoining Tongi-Narsingdi highway for around an hour.
Workers of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited were able to close the leak, just south of Kaliganj Upazila Parishad Bhaban, after fire fighters doused the flames in an hour around 11:00am.
By then an adjacent electrical poll was damaged as the fire had covered an area 150-feet in diameter while the flames reached some six feet in height.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Kamrul Ahsan Talikder said gas was leaking for the last couple of days and a discarded burning cigarette butt might have ignited the flames.
