Firefighters try to help contain the fire at a shophouse in Phatthalung’s Pa Phayom district.
PHATTHALUNG – A fire in a shop in a market set off a fireworks explosion which also wrecked two other buildings in Pa Phayom’s tambon Ban Phrao of Pa Phayom district early Thursday.
Pol Lt Somnuek Boonchu, an investigator at Pa Phayom police station, said the fire started about 4am in a two-storey, two-unit grocery store belonging to Jongjit Thongkaopuak, 55.
The flames caused a large amount of firecrackers kept on the store’s second floor to explode, he said. The blast heavily damaged two other commercial buildings.
Ms Jongjit and her family told police that heat and smoke coming from downstairs woke them up in the middle of the night. They said the fire started behind a beverage cooler in the shop and spread quickly.
A total of 12 fire trucks, some of which came from nearby tambons, were deployed to control the blaze.
After a preliminary investigation, authorities believed the blaze was caused by an electrical short circuit. Police estimated that the damage at 15 million baht.
