BUTWAL: CPN-Maoist cadres yesterday night torched a vehicle being used by Unified CPN-Maoist leader Baburam Bhattarai for poll campaigning in Rupandehi Constituency No 4. The vehicle was set on fire when it was parked at Parrhowa in the district.
According to police, the vehicle has got only a minor damage. The incident site is near the residence of Bhattarai’s personal aide Bishwodip Pandey and the UCPN-M central member Bhakti Pandey, also a confidante of Bhattarai. Police have arrested as many as six persons, including Deepak Thapa and Khimananda Poudel, for their alleged involvement in the blaze.
But, CPN-Maoist Awadh state committee member Sharad Oli claimed that his party cadres were not involved in the incident and demanded their unconditional release. “We will ask the security agency to release them immediately, as they are not involved in the incident,” he said.
Yesterday, former prime minister Bhattarai was in the district and participated in door-to-door campaign in the constituency from where he is contesting the election.
DSP Raj Kumar Baidawar suspected that the vehicle could have been set on fire to disrupt Bhattarai’s election publicity campaigns.
