Fire breaks out in Police Hospital, no casualties
Updated: 2013-10-29-01:00
A FIRE broke out in Bangkok’s Police General Hospital yesterday morning leading to the immediate removal of patients, police said. Nobody was injured in the blaze, which erupted on the ninth floor of the 10-storey Chalerm Prakiart Building at 6.30am.
It took 15 fire engines about an hour to put out the fire.
Pol Lt-General Jongjet Ao-jenpong, the hospital’s surgeon-general, said the fire did not spread beyond the ninth floor, which is currently sealed for inspection and damage assessment.
Some of the patients, which included 10 children, were moved to another building during the fire and most were later brought back to their rooms once the blaze was extinguished.
Services on the ground floor of the building continued as per normal while fire fighters were working to control the blaze above, Jongjet said.
National police chief Pol-General Adul Saensingkaew, who rushed |to the scene, said investigators believe the fire resulted from a short-circuit inside the 200-seat Sant Sarutanond auditorium, which is being renovated.
He said the soundproof cushioning may have caused the fire to spread fast, adding that the automatic fire-extinguishing system was not operating properly when the fire broke out.
Hence, he said, in the future he would ensure that every police station had a fire-fighting team and that sprinklers in the hospital building are checked every month.
Adul also gave Bt10,000 as a reward to Pol Lt-Colonel Withoon Luang-amornsak, deputy Crime Suppression Sub-Division 3, for leading eight officers to fight the fire before the fire engines arrived.
