A policeman was reported killed in a fire that hit the Commission on Elections office in Iligan City before dawn Wednesday.
The fire started at about 2:20 a.m. and was put out past 3 a.m., radio dzBB’s Sam Nielsen reported.
Killed in the fire was a policeman initially identified as PO1 Rey Borinaga, a member of the city’s public safety company.
Borinaga was among the police personnel tasked to guard the Comelec office at Barangay Poblacion.
An initial investigation showed he died from suffocation, the report added.
The report said police have taken into custody a 47-year-old man who was said to have lost the recent barangay elections.
Investigators are verifying if the losing bet was involved in the fire, it added.
But Iligan City fire marshal Rommel Villafuerte, in a later interview with GMA News Online, said a supporter of the candidate who lost in the polls doused the Comelec office with gasoline set the office on fire. — with a report by Mariz Revales /LBG,GMA News
