Pertamina’s tanker ship explodes, killing two

Updated: 2012-08-03-10:39

The Gemilang Perkasa landing craft transport (LCT) ship belonging to state-owned oil and Gas Company PT Pertamina caught fire and exploded on Friday, killing two ship crew members and injuring two others.

The ship was stranded at the Mahakam riverside in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, and was loading 4,200 kiloliters of petroleum it carried from Balikpapan when parts of the dock caught fire before the vessel exploded.

“The two deceased victims were crew members. We have yet to identify them,” at the Samarinda Precinct operational chief First Comr. Nyoman Mertha Dana said as quoted by kompas.com.

The two that were injured were identified as Daniel, 51, a Pertamina mechanic, and Lukman, 38. The two were rushed to the AW Syahrani Regional Hospital in the city.

Mertha said that the incident took place at around 3 p.m. “The fire only occurred in some parts of the ship, but not the entire vessel,” he said.

Mertha said that the police were still investigating the cause of the incident.

“The ship has been taken to safety this evening,” he said. (fzm/lfr)
