BA RIA – VUNG TAU (VNS) – Firefighters were able to contain a fire on November 10 on a foreign container ship that collided with a cargo vessel off the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.
The fire originated from a container on the South Koreanship Heung A Dragon at 2:30pm on Saturday, discharging white and yellow smoke.

Three rescue boats were sent to the site and the blaze was successfully contained at 4:30 pm on Sunday.

According to Vung Tau Port Authority, the goods in the container have not been identified. “It was suspected to be chemicals,” said an official from the port authority.

The representative of the ships owner said they did not know how many containers on Heung A Dragon were hit by the fire and what kinds of goods were in these containers.

The South Korean container ship sunk after it collided with another Marshall-Island cargo vessel Eleni off the coast of the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province on Friday. But all 19 fishermen on the Heung A Dragon were rescued.

At 11:45pm on Friday, the Heung A Dragon was carrying containers from Hong Kong to HCM City when it collided with the Eneli vessel departing from Phu My Port in Tan Thanh District in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.

The accident occurred at 2.2 nautical miles off the Vung Tau coast.

At 5am on Saturday, the ship was stranded in low water and was leaning 45 degrees.

Around 60 containers have fallen out of the ship and are floating in the sea. As of 5 pm Sunday, 29 containers had been collected by the Vung Tau Port Authority and provinces border soldiers. — VNS
