AVI MUMBAI: A fire, probably caused by a short circuit in the wee hours of Thursday, gutted a mobile accessories shop, 500 m away from the Airoli fire station. The fire was doused by neighbours after the shop owner raised an alarm. The residents alleged that the fire personnel did not respond promptly. S N Gaikwad, a fire officer, from Airoli fire station denied the allegations.
Shop owner Chandrabhushan Shivmohan Mishra raised an alarm and the neighbours gathered to douse the fire in 20 minutes. claimed that his staff had reached the spot on time.
“A member of public went to the fire station and called them to the spot” said a resident Ankush Tupe.
Mishra too alleged that the fire staffs were negligent and irresponsible. The fire brigade office is just a stone throwaway from my shop. They reached at the spot with fire tenders after the fire was put out by the public. A few of the staff were drunk”
He further claimed accessories and furniture worth 2.5 lakh were lost in the fire. “I started the shop a couple of month ago. The shop is not insured hence I lost everything in the fire” said Mishra
“There was no delay. As soon we were informed out staff had reached there with water tender and other fire fighting equipments”
Police officials from Rabale police station also visited the spot. The cops suspect that short circuit may be the reason behind the fire. “The matter is under investigation now” said a police officer.
Local corprorator MK. Madhvi said that the power fluctuation is the regular feature in sector-4 of Airoli. According to him, it is a perpetual problem in the area that home appliances of the residents are damaged due to the intermittent power failure “Unlike the other residential nodes in Navi Mumbai, power supply is affected through the overhead wires in sector-4 of Airoli. This supply line is too aged and should be converted into cable system so as to avert the perpetual fluctuation and intermittent power failures in the area”
