Copter crashes into residence building, kills 2 pilots
Updated: 2013-11-22-14:31
A commercial helicopter hit a 38-story high residence building and crashed on ground, leaving two pilots dead.
On Saturday at around 8:55 a.m., HL9294 owned by LG Electronics crashed to 24th and 26th floors of an iPark apartment (number 102) located in Samsung-dong, Seoul. The chopper crash-landed on ground and killed pilot Park In-gyu, 58, and co-pilot Ko Jong-jin, 37.
Residents of the building all evacuated to a safety zone after the crash. No one has yet reported casualties from the crash except two women living on the crashed floors who received mental shocks and were hospitalized. They soon convalesced and left the hospital.
The crash damaged outside the building from 21st to 27th floors. The crashed chopper only left its tail rotor intact.
According to the Seoul Aviation Administration currently housing a contingent investigative control room, the chopper took off from Gimpo Airport at around 8:46 a.m. and headed towards a helipad located in Jamsil to pick up staffs from LG. After staying on a set course along the Han river, it deviated from the course at the trip’s end.
“Heavy mist this morning might have compromised the chopper’s visual and caused the pilots not able to see the building,” said an official from the National Emergency Management Agency.
