Kochi: Major fire breaks out at building at Pallimukku
Updated: 2021-04-29
KOCHI: At least seven units of fire and rescue personnel toiled for over four hours to douse a major fire on the second floor of a building at Pallimukku in Kochi on Wednesday afternoon. Thick black fumes were billowing out of the building, which made the work of the fire fighters all the more difficult.
Damage is likely to run up to lakhs as the blaze engulfed mobile phone accessories and other electronic and electrical equipment in the building.
The second floor was acting as a godown for stocking equipment of electrical and electronic stores and it also had a showroom. A short circuit is suspected to have triggered the fire.
Regional fire officer K K Shiju and station officers from various stations led the firefighting operation. Fire tenders from six fire and rescue stations, including Club Road, Gandhi Nagar, Thrikkakara, Tripunithura, Aluva, and Mattancherry and a unit from the Cochin Shipyard, rushed to the spot to douse the fire.Apart from a lodge nearby which sustained partial damage, the firefighters were able to isolate the fire to the second floor.
Fire officials said lack of proper ventilation prolonged their operation. “We had to break open windows to provide ample ventilation for the smoke to go out. Also, the building was accessible to fire tenders only on one side and firefighters had to climb on the other three sides,” said a fire official. “The fire was completely doused by around 4.30pm,” said a fire force official.
