Top-floor fire claims seven lives

A fire in Mayangone township has claimed the lives of seven people, after a blaze broke out at the Gandamar Whole Sales Centre on December 10.
The fire started at around 12:25am at the Venus Garden Spa on the top floor of the building, according to a report from local police.
The cause of the fire was attributed to the owner of the spa leaving a switched-on iron unattended, which led to the materials around the equipment catching alight.
Emergency services struggled to extinguish the blaze, bringing in some 30 firefighting vehicles. Among the seven killed were three males and two women.
At the time of the police report being issued, officials were still seeking to establish the gender of the remaining two bodies. Further details about the victims are unknown at this stage.
Myayangone township police station charged the spa owner under for negligent homicide and the fire, under sections 304A and 285 of the law respectively.
Damages to the building as a result of the fire were estimated at K.5,675,000 (around US$5,760).
