LUDHIANA: Ludhiana reported another major fire when a plastic godown in Field Ganj went up in flames on Thursday. It was a close shave for a worker in the godown, located in Kutcha Number 16, who had to jump off the second floor to save his life. The flames were visible from a long distance.
The fire officials faced a tough time in reaching the upper floors as the stairs were very narrow. Firemen exercised caution while entering the building, whose walls had developed cracks. Officials had received the fire call at 5.45am . When fire fighters reached the spot, the shutters were locked, and so was the door to the stairs. Opening them took a lot of time.
Leading fireman Rajinder Singh said, “Two types of businesses were being run from the building. At one floor, there was a godown of plastic and crockery material and on the other floor, there was a grocery store.” He said a worker stayed on the top floor of building and managed to come down to the second floor, from where he jumped into an adjoining building. A fireman said there were no sprinklers in the building due to which water supply was not available and he is not sure about NOC too.
