VIZIANAGARAM: In yet another incident of crime against women in Andhra Pradesh, a man attempted to kill his girlfriend (fiancée) who was asleep and the girl’s family members (elder sister and nephew) who came to rescue her, by setting her on fire suspecting that his girlfriend having an affair with someone else at Chowdivada village under Pusapatirega police station limits in Vizianagaram district in the wee hours on Friday.
Fortunately, the girl Gali Ramulamma (21), her elder sister Baki Santhoshi (26) and Santhoshi’s son Baki Aravind (8) escaped from death with 10 to 20 percent of burn injuries.
The police said that A Rambabu, a native of Naaruva village under Srikakulam district and driver by profession fell in love with Ramulamma, a native of Chowdivada around two years ago. Elders of the couple decided to perform their marriage as the boy and girl belonged to the same community. The elders of the families fixed their engagement in August and the marriage in October.
However, Rambabu started suspecting Ramulamma of having an affair with someone else in the village. He quarreled with her on the same issue. Due to the differences, Rambabu decided to cancel the marriage. But, Ramulamma’s family members put pressure on him to marry Ramulamma.
Apparently developing a grudge against the family members of Ramulamma, Rambabu went to her house in the wee hours on Friday and doused petrol on Ramulamma and set her aflame. Her elder sister Santhoshi and her son Arvind came to her rescue. However, he also tried to kill them. The trio suffered 15 to 25 percent of burn injuries.
Vizianagaram police chief Deepika M Patil said that Santhoshi through Disha SOS called the police who rushed to the spot within 20 minutes despite the heavy rain and the police have shifted the injured to the hospital. We have nabbed the accused Rambabu (28) and investigation is on, she added. The condition of the trio is said to be stable, she added.
Chief minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy enquired about the incident with Vizianagaram police and he directed the officials to shift the injured persons to the Vizag city for better medical care.
Minister Botsa Satyanarayana, deputy chief minister Pamula Pushpa Srivani, collector A Surya Kumari, Police Chief Deepika Patil, and senior officials visited the hospital and spoke to the victim. They assured the family members that the government would provide all the help and ensured good treatment. They said the charge sheet will be filed in a week’s time.
