Fire at Civil Hospital triggers panic, nobody injured
Updated: 2021-08-24
The hospital doesn’t have a fire safety no-objection certificate
Gurgaon: A minor fire broke out in a washroom of Civil Hospital, Sector 10 on Monday morning, triggering panic among patients. The flames were soon doused and no injuries were reported.
Hospital officials said the fire was caused due to a short circuit in the washroom of the labour room, which is on the first floor. The four patients who were in the labour room at the time were safely evacuated. Patients in nearby rooms ran towards the ground floor, which created panic among people.
“Due to a short circuit, electric wires caught fire in the labour room’s washroom on the first floor at 9.30am, where four women were admitted. Power supply was disconnected. After it was restored, patients were sent back to the labour room around 10.10am,” said Manish Rathee, deputy medical superintendent of the hospital.
“We managed to douse the fire within a few minutes as it was noticed by the hospital staff very quickly,” he added.
The hospital, which has over 500 admitted patients and staff and is visited by over 3,000 out-patients every day, doesn’t have adequate fire safety arrangements in place. According to the fire department, the hospital was handed over by HSVP to the health department in 2012 without adherence to fire safety norms. “The present management had applied for a no-objection certificate (NOC), but it was not approved after inspection,” said an official from the fire department. The hospital again applied for an NOC in December 2018. Due to irregularities, however, it failed to get the certificate, the official added.
Meanwhile, the health department said it has sent a request to the Haryana directorate general of health services seeking Rs 1.8 crore to fix the fire safety irregularities.
Gurgaon chief medical officer Virender Yadav said: “The matter has been discussed with hospital staff and the principal medical officer has been asked to take adequate action.”
