PUNE: A man died while four women were injured after a fire broke out at a sparkling candle-making small scale unit.
The incident took place around 10.30am on Thursday at the Dhadge industrial estate near Nanded phata, off Sinhagad road.
The candle manufacturing unit was located on the first floor of the building of Bhau Industrial Estate. The ground floor is occupied by a different company. The candles are used on the cakes and at other festive events.
Devendra Potphode, the PMRDA’s chief fire officer said, “The fire broke out during the weighing of sparking powder that is used in the making of birthday candles. Sparks emanating from a bulb that was on over the weighing unit, fell on the adjacent corrugated cardboard boxes which were also covered by a layer of the powder, and led to the fire.”
There were 18 women apart from the man (owner\u002Fsupervisor) inside the unit operating on the first floor of a ground-plus-one structure hired on lease over five years ago.
Some women were moved to safety while four others jumped from the first floor. One of these women sustained a fracture to leg and the other three sustained minor injuries.
The local residents also heard a loud noise of a blast and the window glass pieces were spread on the road.
Potphode and fire station officer Sujit Patil reached the spot with eight fire tenders after receiving the emergency call. It took about one and half hours for the fire brigade officials to douse off the flames.
Police inspector Sadashiv Shelar of Haveli police station told TOI \”We have found a completely charred body of a man, in parts, from the cabin of the unit and we are yet to ascertain the identity of the deceased. We will do the DNA test to establish the identity of the deceased. The owner of the unit is Dattanand Digambar Bendre (36) and he was present in the unit when the fire broke out”.
“There were 16 women and two men, including Bendre, inside the unit when the fire broke out. All rushed out of the unit barring Bendre. Four women jumped off from the first-floor balcony of the building and sustained injuries. One of them has sustained multiple fractures in her leg and she has been admitted to a private hospital located nearby. The others were given discharge after the first aide,” Shelar said.
