Karnataka: Stalker pours petrol, sets married woman on fire in Yadgir

YADGIR: Furious that a woman spurned his overtures, a 25-year-old man poured petrol and set her ablaze outside her house in Yadgir district’s Shorapur taluk late Monday night. The woman succumbed to burns at a Kalaburagi hospital on Tuesday.
Police said the accused, Gangappa, had been stalking the 23-year-old woman even after marriage. He went absconding after attacking her and turned himself in on Tuesday. Police said the incident took place in Chaudeshwari Hala village in Shorapur taluk of the district, nearly 500km from Bengaluru.
The deceased woman and her husband worked as daily-wage labourers.
According to police, Gangappa made a sudden appearance outside the woman’s house late Monday evening when she stepped out to go to the bathroom. When she resisted his advances, Gangappa turned angry and tried to sexually assault her.
When she offered stiff resistance, Gangappa took petrol from a parked bike, set her on fire, pushed her into the bathroom and bolted it from outside. Hearing his wife screaming for help, her husband ran to the bathroom and rushed her to a taluk hospital before shifting her to a government hospital in Kalaburagi — about 108km from Shorapur — where she died the next morning.
Police sources said that the woman, in her dying declaration, had identified the man who tried to sexually assault her as Gangappa. The accused has been arrested and will now be charged with murder.
Keeping the woman’s body, family members protested outside the hospital seeking justice. Police arrived on the scene and pacified them.
