MRT3 injuries climb to eight after fire incident

The number of injured Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT3) passengers rose to eight following the fire that hit one of its older trains on Saturday evening.
MRT3 Director for Operations Michael Capati said some of the passengers had slipped and were bruised, but there were no burn injuries recorded so far. Three women were initially reported injured.
“‘Yung iba nagkaroon ng konting bruises tsaka natapilok, but the rest wala naman pong na-injure dito sa sunog natin, at ito naman po ay dadalhin natin sa depot para malaman natin kung ano ‘yung cause,” he said in a report on GMA’s “24 Oras Weekend” on Sunday.
(Others sustained a few bruises while others slipped, but the rest were not injured by the fire. We will bring the train to the depot to determine the cause of the incident.)
Among those injured was a four-month pregnant woman who felt dizzy and was brought out in a wheelchair. Another was a man who was was brought out in a stretcher with a neck brace put on him.
This comes as a fire broke out on an MRT3 northbound train coach, just meters from the Guadalupe station on Saturday evening, causing passengers to be unloaded onto the tracks.
“Bale nagsimula siya dito sa pangatlong bagon ng MRT dito sa may bandang harap, tapos kumalat na lang siya papunta doon sa gitna. Ngayon, doon sa train driver, nakarinig siya ng mahinang putok,” said Makati Fire Department Arson Investigator Jaime Makabayao said in the same report.
(It started in the third coach of the MRT on the front side, and spread to the middle. The train driver said he heard a faint explosion.)
The involved train is said to be one of the older ones of the MRT3 which was not part of the operator’s general overhaul. Both MRT3 and its maintenance provider Sumitomo are now looking into the incident. — DVM, GMA News
