KOLKATA: A fire broke out on the top floor of West Bengal’s state secretariat building in Howrah around Tuesday noon.
The fire created panic among the top officials as chief minister Mamata Banerjee sits on the top floor of the 14-storey building.
However, due to Puja holidays, the secretariat is closed for a fortnight.
A high-level probe has been ordered into the incident.
A senior official said the fire was spotted at 11.54am on the roof of Nabanna from the electric panel of a Vodafone signal tower.
The police officials spotted the fire and alerted the firefighters at Nabanna.
Within minutes, the fire was brought under control.
A fire official said a fire audit was directed as the chief minister’s office is located on the 14th floor.
The state officials said Vodafone officials would also be questioned during the process of the probe.
As PWD provides the power supply to the signal tower so both the officials of PWD (civil) and PWD (electrical) wings will also have to face the probe.
The fire officials said three fire tenders were pressed into service to control the fire.
A PWD official said earlier there was a major fire at Writer’s Buildings a decade ago and for which there are efforts on tracking fire in the secretariat.
