SURAT: Two migrant workers were killed while over 100 others were rescued after a fire broke out at a textile manufacturing unit in Vareli area of Kadodara GIDC in Surat district on Monday.
One man died soon after the fire started spreading as he tried to got down using a cloth while another suffered serious burn injuries as he was trapped in basement.
Over 100 workers were in the eight-storey building of Viva Packaging including two basement floors when the fire broke out at around 4am. The fire started from lower floors and gradually went up.
On being alerted, police teams from Surat district and fire fighting teams from Bardoli, Surat Municipal Corporation and PEBL reached the spot. At least 15 fire fighters, snorkel and lifts were employed to rescue the workers.
“Over 100 workers were rescued by different fire fighting teams. Though the fire fighting teams reached the spot within minutes, the fire was spreading very fast,” said a police officer.
