The casualties and injured included people who had crowded the shop to buy fireworks for Diwali.

KALLAKURICHI: Five people were charred to death and more than 10 others suffered severe burns in a fire accident at a fireworks godown at Sankarapuram in Kallakuruchi district on Tuesday night. The death toll could rise as several people were reported missing and some of the injured were in a critical state. Police said the fire broke out in a wholesale fireworks shop and soon engulfed adjacent shops. LPG cylinders in some of these shops exploded, adding to the blaze.

The casualties and injured included people who had crowded the shop to buy fireworks for Diwali. Besides, the five who were killed, more than 10 people who sustained severe burn injuries were rushed to Kallkurichi government general hospital for treatment.

The whereabouts of a few workers in the fireworks godown and in the adjacent shops, and of some shoppers were not known at the time of going to press.

Fire tenders from Kallkurichi and Tirukoilyur rushed to the spot to put out the fire.

Traffic movement in the region was disrupted due to fire accident.

Chief minister M K Stalin expressed grief over the tragedy and announced cash relief of 5 lakh each to the families of those killed.
