At least seven persons, including four policemen, have been injured in explosions at Dhaka’s Mouchak on the last day of the outgoing year.
Police said the bombs were hurled at them below the Mouchak overpass at around 6pm on Tuesday, a day before the beginning of the Opposition’s proposed nonstop blockade of roads, railways and waterways across Bangladesh to foil the Jan 5 polls.
Dhaka police’s Ramna zone Deputy Commissioner Maruf Hossain Sardar said they had fired several blank shots after the explosions and detained a youth from the spot.
He identified the injured as constables ‘Aminur’, ‘Kamrul’, Ibrahim’, and a traffic constable Shahidul Islam. Shahidul has been admitted at the Rajarbagh police hospital while the three others were released after primary treatment.
“The explosions triggered panic in the area. Shop owners downed their shutters,” Sardar said.
“Police fired several shots in the air and conducted a raid in the area,” he added.
The police official said one ‘Sohagh’ had been held over the blasts.
