Reason for hotel fire still unknown
Updated: 2014-01-01-01:00

Khon Kaen police collected evidence yesterday at Kaen Inn Hotel, which caught on fire on Sunday. However, they will not be able to say what caused the fire until forensic results come back in another week. It was also reported that the hotel was in a middle of being sold for Bt190 million to a Bangkok-based businessperson and that it was insured for Bt185 million.

The fire reportedly did not affect the building structure but the hotel decor and furniture were destroyed.

Forensic officials were able to collect evidence on all six floors yesterday. Staff told police smoke started from an area near a food-delivery elevator in the kitchen before the flames spread rapidly to other parts of the hotel, prompting people to flee.

Owner Damrong Sirithanachai, 77, said that after the police finish their investigation he would notify the insurance company and get all 90 staff to clean the place. He said that while the hotel would not open this season, he would take care of workers as usual until everything is back to normal. Or, if people were laid off, he would pay compensation as required by law.
