A fire broke out at Chatuchak market in Bangkok on Tuesday, destroying more than 10 stalls. No casualties were reported.

The fire started around noon at the popular weekend market’s project 11 zone on Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road in Chatuchak district, said Pol Lt Col Pairat Thongdonnoi, investigation chief at Bang Sue police station.

Firefighters and fire trucks were deployed to the scene, where flames had engulfed furniture shops. Firefighters took about 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control. Nobody was injured or killed, Thai media reported.

Suthon Suwanpanon, director of the Chatuchak weekend market, said an initial inspection found more than 10 stalls were destroyed in the fire. Most were furniture, flower, clothing and massage stalls.

He said electric wires at the market were old. Worse still, some shops had installed air-conditioners although the market’s electricty supply was limited.

Forensic police collected evidence to establish the exact cause of the fire, said the market director.
