Maharashtra: Fire at chemical company in Khalapur doused after 12 hours
Updated: 2021-11-14
NAVI MUMBAI: A major fire broke out at a chemical company in Khalapur manufacturing industrial oil, boiler furnace diesel oil, pyrolysis oil, boiler furnace fuel oil, etc, at around 12.30am on Saturday.
The fire engulfed the factory and the godown, where the petroleum products were stored in huge quantities, thus acting as a catalyst for the fire to spread rapidly, informed Khalapur police.
Anil Vibhute, senior inspector of Khalapur informed that the fire broke out at Bright Environmental Solutions Pvt Ltd.
There was no casualty as around 10-12 workers staying in the premises of the godown immediately exited when the fire started at the godown and then spread to the entire factory.
As many as 10 Fire engines, 12 water tankers and 20 firefighters from Khopoli fire station and fire rescue team from neighbouring companies were engaged in the fire-fighting operation.
It took more than 12 hours to extinguish the fire. The cooling operation by spraying the water jet will continue till late at night, to ensure that the fire does not restart as huge stock of flammable diesel oil was stocked in the godown. Even members of the NGO Apghatgrasthanchya Madatisathi, including a chemical expert, assisted the fire brigade teams in the fire fighting operation.”
Inspector Vibhute added,”A major disaster was averted by the quick response of firefighters as GAIL India’s natural gas pipeline was passing through the locality. Though the pipeline was underground, the technical team from GAIL India reached the spot to prevent any untoward incident. Prima facie, the cause of fire seems to be due to short-circuit, as claimed by the fire officials. Hence, we will be sending our report to the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health for obtaining the said factory’s inspection report. Accordingly, further legal course of action will be decided.”
