SHIMLA: A fire broke out in Nichli Diudi village in Chirgaon region of Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district on Wednesday late night that left two houses completely burnt while many livestock died.
According to officials, the fire broke out at about 11pm in the house of 80-year-old Salpur who was living in a two-storey house with his three sons and their families.
Fire then spread to the house of Twarmani, 47. Fire partially damaged three other houses while one house was partially dismantled by the villagers to prevent fire from spreading.
Salpur was alone at home during the incident as other family members were attending a wedding ceremony. Although villagers rushed to the spot to douse the fire, they could not save two houses which were destroyed completely within a few minutes.
Not only cash, jewellery and other household items like furniture, bedding, utensils, ration, clothes and documents were burnt but 10 animals were also burned alive in the incident.
An official said that three goats, one sheep, two cows and a calf were burned alive along with the house and cowshed of Salpur beside cash and other articles of the house.
“Besides cash and all other household articles, three cows were burnt alive in the house of Twarmani. Both the houses have completely destroyed. The flames also destroyed three other houses partially. The fire started from the house of Salpur,” he said.
Police said the reason of fire is still unknown.
“The fire was controlled after many efforts by villagers and the fire services. No human casualties were reported. However, some livestock have been burned alive.”
The officials from revenue department reached the village on Thursday morning.
The victims were given immediate relief as per government manual.
The houses have continued to burn in the villages in Himachal Pradesh in winter season.
Fire is razing mostly old houses built with timber and rubble and those who stock fodder inside house. The fire spread very fast in these houses.
The main reason for the fire in most cases is short circuit.
In a similar incident, 27 houses had been reduced to ashes by fire in Majhan village of Kullu a few days back.
