Fire destroys over 1,000 houses in Bangladesh Rohingya camp

Updated: 2022-01-09

A fire has reportedly scorched through thousands of houses and establishments at a Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya.

However, no fatalities have yet been reported after the fire broke out on Sunday. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

The fire started at Rohingya camp No. 16 in Palangkhali Union’s Shafiullah Kata area around 5:30 pm and swiftly spread to nearby areas, Additional Refugee and Repatriation Commissioner Md Shamsud Douza Nayan said.

It took four fire engines more than an hour to tame the flames. Locals and volunteers also joined the rescue efforts.

Nayan said the fire caused massive damage to refugee homes, while also charring the offices of several aid agencies in the area.

“The blaze was brought under control around 7:15 pm. The Fire Service is trying to prevent it from spreading further. They will also determine the extent of the damage.”

“We are trying to figure out [the number of injuries or fatalities].”

In March last year, a massive fire had similarly ripped through thousands of homes at the refugee camp, leaving at least 11 people dead.

The blaze destroyed homes of around 45,000 people of over 9,300 families, according to the government.

More than 200 structures of Bangladeshi locals were also damaged in the fire that raged on for more than five hours.
