Updated: 2022-02-02
According to the driver, Kemparaju, smoke started from the bonnet of the bus and fire broke out later. A short circuit could have been the reason, police said
BENGALURU: Twenty-five passengers had a miraculous escape when the BMTC bus they were travelling in caught fire near South End Circle, Jayanagar, on Tuesday afternoon. The bus (route no. 215) was heading to Amrutanagar when the fire broke out at 1pm, police said. There were 25 passengers on board, said a BMTC spokesperson.
This is the second such incident in less than two weeks. On January 21, a BMTC bus caught fire near Makkalakuta, Chamarajpet, and the crew managed to move nearly 25 passengers to safety.
“On Tuesday, the bus had reached near Nanda theatre when driver Kemparaju noticed smoke emanating from under the engine bonnet. Immediately, he alerted conductor Mantappa and directed the passengers to get down. By then, one of the passengers called the fire control room and a fire tender from Jayanagar station was pressed into service,” police said. Kemparaju and Mantappa did not respond to calls from TOI.
“According to Kemparaju, the smoke started from the bonnet and the fire broke out later. A short circuit could be the reason behind the blaze,” said a fire personnel.
