AHMEDABAD: What should have been a time for good food and enjoyment turned into tragedy after a 54-year-old woman’s sari caught fire and she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
Rashmika Shah, a resident of Gangeshwar society in Maninagar, died on Monday evening, six days after her sari caught fire in at the buffet line in a five-star hotel in Ellisbridge on January 26.
“Rashmika had accompanied her husband Umesh to a dinner party organized by her husband’s firm at hotel Four Points by Sheraton,” Ellisbridge inspector Sumit Rajput said.
“She was filling up her plate at the buffet table when her synthetic sari touched the fuel of the chafing dish and it caught fire. She suffered severe burns and was admitted to Civil hospital ,” said PSI H V Ghela.
He added, “Rashmika suffered nearly 60% burns mainly in the front section of her body. She was critical when admitted. After being treated for nearly six days, she died around 6.30pm on Monday.”
On the fire extinguisher service at the hotel, Ghela said, “Rashmika suffered severe burns within minutes. The dinner party was taking place in the banquet hall. The hotel stafftried to douse the fire but she had suffered severe burns by then. No other person or article in the hotel was burnt in the incident.”
A case of accidental death has been registered with Ellisbridge police.
Attempts to reach spokesperson of the hotel and the Marriott International Group which run the property were in vain.
