Fire destroys sugar cane crops on 17 acre in Niphad
Updated: 2022-02-09
Nashik: A fire at the Shingve village, in Niphad taluka, completely destroyed sugar cane crop in more than 17 acre of land on Monday night.
Farmers said the fire started in the field of a farmer named Bhaulal Korde after 6 pm and continued till 11 pm. The farmers tried to douse the fire, but crops on 17 acre of land were lost. They claimed that sparking in the overhead wires of the distribution company had led to the fire that spread of farm to farm within a very short time.
“The farms are very close to each other. The flames from one farm spread to the other rapidly. Thankfully, there was no house or hut in the area,” said Sampat Korde, a farmer.
The officials of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited, said the panchanama of the crop damage was being carried out and so far, it has been assessed that crops on about 17 acre of land have been destroyed. An officer, however, said that the cause of the fire is yet to be established.
“We do not know the cause of the fire. Based on the farmers’ claims, our local officials have assessed the area. The valuation will be carried out only if the fire has been caused due to MSEDCL, which will be established by the electrical inspector in his report,” Vikas Adhe, the public relations officer of MSEDCL’s Nashik Zone, said. The process of valuation is carried out by the agriculture department. It will be done after the MSEDCL sends a letter requesting the same.
Niphad tahsildar Sharad Ghorpade said the revenue officers will only monitor the development. “It is binding upon the MSEDCL to compensate for the losses if it is responsible for the fire. The farmers can approach the administration for the resolution if there are any issues.”
