Updated: 2022-02-25
Kolhapur: As the farmers were protesting outside the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) divisional office in Kolhapur demanding 12-hour power supply during the day time, some unidentified suspects set a state power utility office in Kagal on fire late on Wednesday.
Fire tenders from Shahu Sugar factory area immediately reached the spot and doused the blaze. Damage to office property has been reported due to the fire. According to the local crime branch of Kolhapur police, the suspects are likely young farmers from Kagal who are upset because of the state government and MSEDCL officials’ apathy to their demand.
Meanwhile, the protest outside MSEDCL divisional office entered the third day on Thursday. After the fire incident, Raju Shetti, who is leading the protest, said, “I appeal to the young farmers to show restraint and not to resort to violence. The government uses such incidents to put an end to peaceful protests. Only Satyagraha will help us get our demand fulfilled which the farmers community have shown in recent times as well.”
He added, “The state government should intervene as early as possible to meet our demands before more young farmers resort to violence. The farmers will not let the ministers roam freely if they continue to ignore their demands.”
After the fire incident, police deployment at the protest site was increased. Also, police teams have been deployed to protect the Mahavitaran offices across the district in anticipation of similar attacks.
Meanwhile, Kolhapur police have registered a case against unknown people and are investigating the case.
