Five killed in explosion in fireworks godown

COIMBATORE: At least five people were killed and several others seriously injured when a major explosion ripped through a fireworks godown in Kamaneri village, 35 km from Salem in western Tamil Nadu on Tuesday afternoon. District authorities said the death toll was likely to increase as at least six others suffered serious burn injuries and were rushed to private hospitals in the district.
The mishap occured at 2.30 pm when there were about 11 people inside the godown. The district administration and police officials have confirmed that two people were killed on the spot and two more were brought dead to Salem government hospital. The godown’s explosive license was under the process of being renewed and it was not permitted to have workers engaged in fireworks manufacturing when the mishap occurred. “Three people were killed on the spot and there were about 11 workers at the accident site when the blast occurred. The unit has been running for the past 30 years and it had recently applied for renewal of license, which is still process,” said Salem district superintendent of police Ashwin M Kotnis.
The officials also added that the exact cause for the mishap is yet to be ascertained. But, a shed where the blast occurred was gutted in the fire.
