Moving Aapli bus catches fire on Katol Road

Updated: 2022-03-09

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the fire was caused due to leakage in diesel pipe, said a Gittikhadan police official

BENGALURU: Fire incidents were reported in two open grounds where police had parked Nagpur: Aapli bus with around 50 passengers caught fire while in motion near Gittikhadan police station on Tuesday afternoon.

The standard bus (MH31\u002FCA6102) started from Kalmeshwar at around 3pm and was on its way to Sitabuldi after picking up a couple of passengers from Gittikhadan bus stop. At around 3.45pm, the bus driver Rupesh Bhiwankar noticed smoke from the front portion of the bus.

Bhiwankar immediately stopped the bus and asked conductor Roshan Kokate to get the bus vacated.

Eyewitnesses told TOI that a major tragedy was averted as the bus caught fire on Katol Road between a petrol pump and an LPG godown near the city police headquarters.

Chief fire officer Rajendra Uchake stated in a press note that the driver tried to douse the blaze with the help of a fire extinguisher, but in vain.

On being informed, a fire tender from Civil Lines reached there but the fire had engulfed the entire bus and the tender failed to control it. Another fire tender was pressed to control the blaze, but by then the bus was almost destroyed.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused due to leakage in diesel pipe, said an official from Gittikhadan police station, where a case has been registered. The cops are probing further.

Aapli Bus employees said periodic maintenance of city buses has taken a backseat. They added that “neither the operators nor the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s transport department” monitor the maintenance of Aapli Bus fleet, which ferry over a lakh passengers daily.
