Fire destroys 36 seized vehicles in police yards

Updated: 2022-03-12

One fire tender battled the blaze in the ground next to KG Halli police station, whereas two vehicles had to be deployed in Kengeri

BENGALURU: Fire incidents were reported in two open grounds where police had parked seized vehicles in the city on Friday. While the morning blaze in the ground next to KG Halli police station gutted seven cars, another in the space next to Kengeri station damaged 20 cars, six autorickshaws and three bikes.

One fire tender battled the blaze in KG Halli, whereas two vehicles had to be deployed in Kengeri. Fire and emergency services department ruled out arson and termed both fires ‘accidental’.

The department received a call about the fire near KG Halli station around 10.30am.

Vinod Jadhav, fire station officer at Banaswadi, told TOI the cars had been parked on the ground for over two years. “We do not suspect this was an act of arson. The cause of the fire has not been determined yet but we think that someone may have thrown a cigarette\u002Fbeedi butt on the ground. Since there is only dry grass here, the flames must have spread quickly,” he said.

Firefighters were able to fully douse the flames by 12.30pm.

The fire control room received a call about the fire next to Kengeri police station at 1.38pm. According to DCP (west) Sanjeev Patil, at least 12 vehicles were majorly damaged and a few others suffered minor damage. Vehicles that caught fire were to do with rioting, theft and robbery cases, among others. Some had been seized more than 10 years ago.

Shivakumar K, director of fire and emergency services, said the department does not think the two fires were connected. “Even near Kengeri police station, there is a lot of dry grass, so the cause must have been a cigarette butt. However, we haven’t completed our investigation into the cause,” he said.
