Delhi: 7 charred to death as fire engulfs 60 shanties in Gokulpuri

A fire call was received at around 1am last night.
NEW DELHI: At least seven people were killed and nearly 60 shanties were razed after a fire broke out in Delhi’s Gokulpuri area on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.
Total 13 fire tenders were rushed to the site. “The fire was brought under control, seven bodies were recovered by the fire Department,” said Delhi Fire Service.
“We recovered seven charred bodies which are unrecognisable, it seemed that these people were sleeping and couldn’t escape as the fire spread extremely fast. 60 huts were also completely burnt. We are yet to know the reasons behind the fire,” news agency ANI quoted Atul Garg, director of Delhi Fire Services, as saying.
The fire department had received the call at around 1am.
At 1am there was a fire incident in Gokulpuri police station area. Teams reached the spot immediately with all rescue equipment. We also contacted the fire department. We could douse the fire by around 4am,” said additional DCP, North East Delhi.
