The fire broke out on Tangra’s Mehr Ali Lane
KOLKATA: At least two firefighters were injured when they tried to control a major fire that broke out at a tannery on Tangra’s Mehr Ali Lane on Saturday evening. One of them was injured when a brick fell on his head. Both have been admitted to NRS Hospital and their condition was stated to be serious.
With the area surrounding the warehouse thickly populated, at least nine fire engines responded to the call made around 6.30 pm. In the next half an hour, six more joined. Till reports at 11.30pm, the blaze was still raging but firemen managed to stop it from spreading.
“The fire engulfed the tannery very fast. Inhabitants of the adjacent shanties have been evacuated by a team of fire department and DMG of Kolkata Police,” said an officer at Lalbazar.
Fire minister Sujit Bose, who rushed to the spot, rubbished claims that fire tenders arrived late. “We responded immediately. The lanes leading to this place are narrow,” he said.
