Updated: 2014-01-17-7:12
A number of guests panicked and evacuated Hotel Kaisar, located on Jl. Duren Tiga, Pancoran, South Jakarta, when it was engulfed by thick smoke at 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, after catching fire while most guests and staff were sleeping.
The thick smoke came from the seventh floor, where the fire also originated. Guests said that they did not see fire but only thick smoke on the seventh floor.
Fire Department head Subejo said an evacuation of guests and workers was conducted while the fire was being extinguished.
Some guests used the emergency exit while others used the hotel’s lift to escape.
“The evacuation was smooth and safe, although guests were panicked at breathing in the thick smoke,” he said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Subejo said 28 fire trucks were deployed and the fire
was put out in 40 minutes.
He added the fire was caused by a short circuit in a storeroom on the hotel’s seventh floor.
No fatalities were reported in the incident but 16 people received medical attention for smoke inhalation.
