Navi Mumbai: Fuel pipeline leak causes fire in MIDC Mahape area
Updated: 2022-04-06
As many as 30 firefighters and eight fire engines were used for the firefighting operation.
NAVI MUMBAI: A gas-pipeline leakage in the forest area of Navi Mumbai’s Mahape MIDC led to a major fire on Tuesday morning.
The fire gutted some makeshift godowns in the vicinity, as the fuel from the pipeline leaked and flowed along the pathway for about one kilometre.
Koparkhairane fire station officer Rohan Kokate said, “We received the emergency fire call at 7.05am on Tuesday. We rushed to the spot with two fire tenders and a water browser. As the fire was raging in the forest area, we summoned firefighters and fire engines from Vashi, Nerul, Shirawane, Rabale MIDC and Thane.”
“As many as 30 firefighters and eight fire engines were used for the firefighting operation. We used eight drums of foam along with a water jet for dousing the fire. The fire was extinguished after four hours around 11am. As the fire broke out in the vicinity of the slum pocket and a truck terminal, the quick response by fire brigade teams in controlling the spread of fire averted a major tragedy,” he added.
Kokate said, “A diesel pipeline of BPCL runs from Mumbai to Manmad and passes from Mahape MIDC area, where the leakage was detected on Monday. It is suspected that some diesel thieves had tampered with the diesel pipeline that caused the leakage. Hence, BPCL company’s technical team had started the repairs work after plugging the leakage yesterday itself”.
Rajendra Awadh, senior police inspector of Turbhe MIDC said, “As there are rumours on social media that the fuel pipeline was tampered with by diesel thieves, which caused the leakage and fire breakout, the police will probe all possible angles.”
