Video: Another electric scooter burns! PureEV’s fourth fire incident
Updated: 2022-04-20
Adding to the long list of electric scooters that went up in flames over the past few weeks, a PureEV electric scooter was seen on fire in Warangal in Telangana on Tuesday. About two dozen electric scooter fires have been reported in India with the onset of summer this year. Also, this is the fourth EV fire incident that involves a PureEV scooter in the past seven months.
The video below posted by ETAuto shows a red PureEV ePluto scooter parked at the side of a road enveloped in smoke and flames. If you listen closely, there are pops at intervals suggesting thermal runaway as lithium-ion cells inside the battery pack would be combusting one after the other.
Two PureEV scooters caught fire in Hyderabad in September 2021, followed by another in Chennai last month.
News on electric scooter fires has been rather constant since the Ola S1 Pro electric scooter was seen on fire on 26 March in Pune. On the very same day, there was a tragic incident reported in Tamil Nadu where a father and daughter lost their lives in a fire that started in an Okinawa electric scooter’s battery pack.
An electric scooter caught fire on 28 March, followed by PureEV fire incident in Chennai, and then 20 electric scooters from Jitendra EV went up in flames in a container truck during transit on 9 April near Nashik.
These incidents have unsurprisingly triggered a debate on EV battery safety. The Road Transport Ministry has asked the Centre for Fire Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES) to investigate the cause of the fires and submit a report by the end of this month. CFEES is the defence laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
