Man Suspected Of Setting Girlfriend’s House On Fire Detained In Perak
Updated: 2014-01-22-12:00

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 (Bernama) — A man, believed to have torched a housing unit at Perumahan Awam Desa Rejang, Setapak Jaya, causing three people, including his girlfriend and 18-month old daughter, to suffer burns yesterday, has been detained by the police early Wednesday.

Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department deputy head ACP Khairi Ahrasa said the 27-year-old suspect was detained at Taman Desa Bernam Indah, Hutan Melintang, in Perak, at about 3am.

The man was in possession of a transparent plastic, believed to contain cannabis, when arrested, he told a media conference after the Kuala Lumpur police contingent’s Maulidur Rasul celebration here.

He said the man would be in remand for investigation under Section 436 of the Penal Code, which is causing mischief by fire, and Section 307 of the same law, for attempted murder.

Based on preliminary investigations, he said the incident broke out following a misunderstanding between the man and his girlfriend, which ended with the man setting fire to the house.

He said the suspect’s girlfriend, who is a single mother, suffered 65 per cent burns on the body and was reported in critical condition.

Her daughter is also in critical condition, while the third person, aged 62, who is the girl’s grandmother, was given out-patient treatment, he added.

The suspect was said to have gone to the house to meet his girlfriend, who has three children, during which an argument broke out between them.

The man then left the house, but returned a few minutes latter and went into the woman’s room where he poured petrol and then lit it.
