Manager & engineer found dead in fire at Navi Mumbai chemical unit

THANE: A day after a massive fire broke out at a chemical company in Navi Mumbai, two bodies were recovered from the site.
The deceased have been identified as Monukumar Nair (65), manager of West Coast Polychem Pvt Ltd, and Nikhil Pashilkar (29), engineer, said fire officer Purushottam Jadhav.
Both residents of Kalyan, they had been caught up on the premises of the company located at MIDC, Trans-Thane creek area when the fire broke out. A day earlier, two women had been hospitalised for smoke inhalation. Their condition is improving now.
On Saturday, cooling operation was undertaken after the fire was brought under control. Fire officials said that an adjoining rubber factory, Hind Elastomers Pvt Ltd, and another industrial unit had also caught fire at the time. However, workers from these two adjacent units were evacuated in time.
Fire officials said that a lot of raw material like elastic, rubber and certain volatile chemicals in all the three units involved in the fire had led to the massive blaze, posing a big challenge to the fire-fighters. The cause of the blaze has not been ascertained and an investigation into the same is going on, said officials.
