J&K: Forest fire triggers several landmine explosions along LoC in Poonch
Updated: 2022-05-18
NEW DELHI: NEW DELHI: Several landmines planted along the Line of Control in J&K’s Poonch district have become the unlikely casualties of forest fire.
A fire that started on the other side of LoC and gradually spread to the Indian side in the Mendhar sector caused about half a dozen landmines to explode, officials said on Wednesday.
The landmines are deployed to check infiltration from across the LoC.
The hot and dry weather prevailing over the region has made conditions favourable to forest fire.
A fire that started in the Daramshal block spread fast due to powerful winds. It was brought under control with help from the Army.
In Rajouri district, another huge fire broke out in the Sunderbandi area near the border which spread to other forest areas, including Ghambhir, Nikka, Panjgraye, Brahamana, Moghala, officials said on Wednesday
Fire also erupted in Kalakote’s Kalar, Ranthal, Chingi forests.
“The fire came from across the border and also spread to LOC areas of Upper Kangdi and Dok Banyad”, an official said.
In Jammu district too, a massive fire was broke out in the agriculture fields along International Border. It spread to the Beli Azmat borer out post (BoP) of the BSF before being brought under control.
