Square Pharmaceuticals factory fire doused after 7-hour fight in Gazipur

As many as 19 fire engines have put out the flames at a Square Pharmaceuticals factory in Gazipur after seven hours of efforts.
The extent of damage was not determined on Monday night.
The fire erupted inside the factory’s newly-introduced large-volume parenteral unit around 12:30pm.
The fire swept through the ground floor to the second floor of the factory fast, accelerated by the chemicals present there.
The Fire Service and Civil Defence’s warehouse inspector Saiful Islam said the 19 units arrived from Kaliakoir, Savar’s DEPZ, Tangail’s Sakhipur, Mirzapur and nearby areas.
Although the fire was brought under control after seven hours, damping and search operations continued until 8:45pm.
No casualties were reported in the incident.
A committee will be formed on Tuesday to investigate the cause of the fire, said Dinmani Sharma, a deputy director at the fire service headquarters.
Md Faridul Islam, a human resource executive of the factory, said the fire began on the technical floor where saline is made.
“Not much manpower is needed there. Some people are stationed there for maintenance but they got out during the fire. So no one was hurt,” he said.
Lt Col Md Rezaul Karim, a director of the fire service, and Assistant Director Md Abdul Halim inspected the site later.
