Updated: 2014-01-27-12:00
BALIK PULAU, Jan 27 (Bernama) — Two unidentified individuals hurled two molotov cocktails into the compound of a church here early today, starting a fire that did not cause much damage, said police.
Penang Chief Police Officer Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the two individuals, who were on a motorcycle, threw the explosives into the compound of the church in Lebuh Farquhar at 1.30 am.
One of the molotov cocktails exploded and caused a fire but it did not result in any serious damage, he told reporters.
He said the police recorded a statement from the caretaker who claimed to have seen the incident.
The police forensics team would also watch the recording of a closed circuit television camera to identify the suspects, he said.
Abdul Rahim warned that the police would take stern action against individuals or groups that attempted to undermine public order by creating chaos.
He said the offence, under Section 435 of the Penal Code, provided for a jail term of up to seven years and a fine upon conviction.
He advised the people not to be concerned and to place their trust in the police to maintain peace and security in the state.
On another matter, Abdul Rahim said the police had received nine reports on the banners with provocative phrases pertaining to the use of the word ‘Allah’ put up at several locations in the state yesterday.
